How to Cut Your Own Hair at Home: Bangs, Layers & Easy DIY Haircuts
I've been cutting and trimming my own hair at home for years, and some of the most popular tutorials I've ever shared are my DIY haircut videos.
Whether you're trying to trim overgrown bangs, add a few layers to your hair, maintain a lob between salon appointments or figure out what to do while growing out side-swept bangs, I've collected my most helpful tutorials together in one place.
I've also put all five tutorials into a Cut Your Hair at Home YouTube playlist, so you can watch through the entire series.
Below, you'll find each tutorial individually so you can jump straight to the haircut you're looking for.
1. How I Cut and Layer My Hair at Home
If you're wondering how to cut layers in your own hair, this is a good place to start. In this tutorial, I show the process I use to cut and layer my own hair at home.
I especially like doing small maintenance cuts myself when my hair needs some shape but I don't necessarily want a completely different haircut.
Best for:
Longer hair, DIY layers and at-home haircut maintenance.
Before cutting your own layers
Start conservatively. It's much easier to go back and remove a little more length than it is to fix a section you've accidentally cut too short.
Work slowly, make small cuts and periodically stop to see how the hair is falling naturally before continuing.
2. How to Cut Side-Swept Bangs While Growing Them Out
Growing out bangs creates that awkward stage where they're no longer really bangs—but aren't quite long enough to blend into the rest of your hair either.
This tutorial shows how I've cut and shaped side-swept bangs while growing them out so they blend more naturally into the surrounding hair.
Best for:
Overgrown bangs, long bangs and transitioning side-swept bangs.
3. How to Cut Side-Swept Bangs at Home
This is one of my classic DIY hair tutorials and one of the techniques readers and viewers have returned to again and again.
If you're specifically looking for how to cut side-swept bangs yourself, this tutorial walks through how I shape mine at home.
One of the biggest things I've learned from cutting my own bangs is to resist the temptation to take off too much at once. Bangs can look considerably shorter once they're dry and sitting naturally.
You can always trim a little more.
4. Easy DIY Side-Swept Bangs
This is another version of my side-swept bangs tutorial and has become one of the most watched videos on my channel.
If you're comparing techniques or simply want to see the process demonstrated again before picking up the scissors, watch this one next.
5. DIY Haircut: How I Add Layers to a Lob
If you have a long bob or lob, you may find that it starts looking heavy or loses some of its shape as it grows.
In this tutorial, I demonstrate how I've added layers to my own lob at home.
Best for:
Lobs, long bobs and adding movement to shorter hairstyles.

These tutorials show how I personally cut and maintain my own hair at home. Hair texture, density and style can affect the results, so if you're unsure about making a significant change, consider consulting a professional stylist.
